San Yama Ryu mon

The Fire Path · Will leads

Every San Yama student trains all four elements of the mon. Adults lead with fire: the will to act.

Functional Protective Arts

San Yama Ryu Bujutsu

A no-nonsense synthesis of kempo, jujutsu, and taijutsu — the combat-effective heart of three major Japanese systems, distilled into one comprehensive art of functional protection.

Legitimate arts for legitimate martial artists

Not a sport.
A way of living.

Bujutsu translates as the science of war — so you won't find sport technique or competitive attitude here. We base our lifestyle on traditional warrior training: throws, projections, joint manipulation, pressure points, weapons, ground technique, and spiritual energy.

San Yama Ryu was developed by Soke John Primeaux and Soke-Dai Matt from ranking earned across many traditional Japanese systems. It preserves the ancient samurai arts while shaping a path for each unique member of the dojo family.

The Three Modules

One comprehensive art, built from the major elements of the samurai lifestyle:

  • Kempo & Karate — traditional blocks, strikes, and kicks.
  • Jujutsu — throws, jointlocks, and chokes.
  • Taijutsu — body movement, timing, and connection — the glue that holds the system together.

What is Functional Protective Arts?

Three words define how we train. Each one is deliberate — earned over four decades on the mat, not borrowed from a brochure.

Functional

What actually works

The approach we take after decades of refining what works effectively — with the greatest rewards and the expected outcomes when it matters.

Protective

Defense of self & others

Not only self-defense, but the defense of those in our care — and the preservation of a body of knowledge passed down to us for generations.

Arts

A living synthesis

Plural by design: our effort to combine compatible techniques from a broad sampling of traditional Japanese and Okinawan styles into one art.

The Fire Path

Four elements. Forged for adults.

The mon holds four elements. Adults train all four, and lead with fire: the will to act, decisively, when it matters.

Our focus

Will

Courage · Action · Resilience

Fire is the decision to act. Functional protective arts are trained with real consequence and control, for the defense of self and those in your care.

  • Technique that holds up under pressure
  • Defense of self and others
  • Composure that carries into work, home and daily life

Mindset

Situational awareness and a prepared mind. Discipline before technique.

Skills

Training · Practice · Confidence

Technique refined daily: ukemi, throws, locks, trained with control.

Weapons, traditional and modern, after black belt.

What you train

A complete combat system

San Yama Ryu includes kicks and strikes, but the emphasis falls on the disciplines the samurai actually lived by.

01 / Body

Ukemi & Conditioning

The "falling ways" teach the body to adjust energetically and physiologically to contact — first with the ground, then with every incoming attack.

02 / Technique

Throws & Locks

Properly applied techniques disrupt the body's meridians and create structural malfunction. Real consequence, trained with control.

03 / Weapons

Traditional & Modern

After black belt you cultivate the weapons of the warrior — sword, staff, and beyond — both traditional and modern.

04 / Spirit

Healing & Ki

Healing and spiritual disciplines are woven through training, marrying breath with movement to find peace with the universe.

05 / Lineage

Certified Masters

Our instructors hold Okinawan and Japanese rank across Karate, Kempo, Judo, Jujutsu, Taijutsu, and the classical weapon arts.

06 / Individual

Taught as One

Every student is evaluated daily as an individual with independent needs — no commercial belt-factory, no scheduled rank tests.

The Revolution

To follow this method of living and learning is to join one of the only true counter-cultures remaining in a society comfortable with the ordinary and complacent.

Where the next generation begins

The same art, taught for young students at four age levels, including a daytime program for homeschool families.
