Think Different?

How is San Yama Ryu different?

San Yama Ryu is a composition of techniques taken from karate, kempo, judo, jujutsu and taijutsu. We have distilled our experience in martial arts and teach only the techniques we feel will work for self-defense, while also preserving the samurai arts. The approach is to shape a path for each unique member of our dojo family.

Phase 01

Kempo & Karate

You begin with traditional blocks, strikes, and kicks — the striking foundation of the art.

Phase 02

Jujutsu

Next you enter the study of throws, jointlocks and chokes — controlling and neutralizing an opponent.

Phase 03

Taijutsu

Your study culminates in taijutsu — the body movement, timing, and connection that bind the whole system together.

Phase 04

Weapons

After reaching black belt you cultivate the use of weapons, both traditional and modern.

Trained to survive life

It is our goal to train our students how to survive life — which sometimes includes violent attacks. During the early level of training we focus on evasive techniques to keep you out of harm's way. The next level conditions your body for physical contact and trains you to neutralize your opponent. Then you combine these areas to develop a personal method of self-defense.

People do not join us because we are different — but because they are.

To be blunt: there is no perfect martial art, and not every person will be a fit here. Because of that, don't expect long contracts, scheduled rank tests, or easy promotions. So, to answer the question — San Yama is not different. It is made up of like-spirited martial artists who are on a journey. They are different. We are different. If you are too, you might be a great fit here.
