What actually works
The approach we take after decades of refining what works effectively — with the greatest rewards and the expected outcomes when it matters.
Functional Protective Arts
A no-nonsense synthesis of kempo, jujutsu, and taijutsu — the combat-effective heart of three major Japanese systems, distilled into one comprehensive art of functional protection.
Bujutsu translates as the science of war — so you won't find sport technique or competitive attitude here. We base our lifestyle on traditional warrior training: throws, projections, joint manipulation, pressure points, weapons, ground technique, and spiritual energy.
San Yama Ryu was developed by Soke John Primeaux and Soke-Dai Matt from ranking earned across many traditional Japanese systems. It preserves the ancient samurai arts while shaping a path for each unique member of the dojo family.
One comprehensive art, built from the major elements of the samurai lifestyle:
Three words define how we train. Each one is deliberate — earned over four decades on the mat, not borrowed from a brochure.
The approach we take after decades of refining what works effectively — with the greatest rewards and the expected outcomes when it matters.
Not only self-defense, but the defense of those in our care — and the preservation of a body of knowledge passed down to us for generations.
Plural by design: our effort to combine compatible techniques from a broad sampling of traditional Japanese and Okinawan styles into one art.
San Yama Ryu includes kicks and strikes, but the emphasis falls on the disciplines the samurai actually lived by.
The "falling ways" teach the body to adjust energetically and physiologically to contact — first with the ground, then with every incoming attack.
Properly applied techniques disrupt the body's meridians and create structural malfunction. Real consequence, trained with control.
After black belt you cultivate the weapons of the warrior — sword, staff, and beyond — both traditional and modern.
Healing and spiritual disciplines are woven through training, marrying breath with movement to find peace with the universe.
Our instructors hold Okinawan and Japanese rank across Karate, Kempo, Judo, Jujutsu, Taijutsu, and the classical weapon arts.
Every student is evaluated daily as an individual with independent needs — no commercial belt-factory, no scheduled rank tests.
“People do not join us because we are different — but because they are.”
To follow this method of living and learning is to join one of the only true counter-cultures remaining in a society comfortable with the ordinary and complacent.
Learn self-defense for life. After visiting our dojo you'll see how much our instructors prepare for your martial arts education — the dedication of the sensei must be met by equal commitment from every student.
